When a division problem has a remainder it means that the number cannot be divided equally into the specified amount of groups. For example,

If there are 25 pieces of candy and we wanted to divide that candy among 4 people, we could give each person 6 pieces of candy, but there would be one left over. That piece is the remainder, as giving it to one of the people would create unequal groups of candy.
