a freight train leave the town and goes north at the rate of 40 miles per hour

a second train starts North 3 hours later

If the rate of the second train is 56 miles an hour ,in how many hours after the first train started with a second train over take the first?

Let x = number of hours since the first train left the station

 

Distance = (Rate)(Time)

 

Distance traveled by freight train in x hours = 40x

Distance traveled by second train since the freight train started = 56(x-3)

 

The second train catches up to the freight train when

              40x = 56(x-3)

 

              40x = 56x - 168

 

             -16x = -168

 

                   x = 10.5 hours

After 3 hours, the first train is 120 miles ahead. Since the second train is traveling 16 mph faster, it will overtake the first train in 120mile/16 mph = 7.5 hours
