Question

"In a football game, Team A defeated Team B by a score of 28 to 10. The total points scored came from a combination of touchdowns, extra-point kicks, and field goals, worth 6, 1, and 3 points, respectively. The numbers of touchdowns and extra-point kicks were equal. There were five times as many touchdowns as field goals. Find the number of touchdowns, extra-point kicks, and field goals scored."

 

so if X is touchdowns, Y is extra point kicks, and Z is field goals i was able to get the following equations... then I'm stumped.

 

6x+ y+3z=38

x - y = 0

x - 5z = 0

Solve the 2nd equation for y (y = x) and the 3rd equation for z (z = x/5).  

 

Then substitute these values for y and z in the 1st equation to get 6x + (x) + 3(x/5) = 38. 

 

Then solve this equation for x.  Once you know x, use the solved 2nd and 3rd equations to find y and z.
