A Pet Food store sells dry dog food in either large or small bags. A monthly stocktake of the dry dog food is taken and measured in kilograms. The last two stocktakes have revealed the following information:

 

-Month of March: 14 large bags and 6 small bags weighed a total of 70.5kg

-Month of April: 11 large bags and 2 small bags weighed a total of 52kg

 

The store currently has 6 large bags and 4 small bags of dog food. How many kilograms of the dog food are in stock?

Let

 

 x: weight of large bag

 y: weight of small bag

 

Then, you have a system of 2 equations:

 

 14x+6y=70.5

 11x+2y=52

 

Solve this system of equations any way you like (I chose eliminating y)

Once you have solved for x and y, plug them into the equation 6x+4y since you have 6 large bags and 4 small bags.

The answer you obtain will be the kilograms of dog food that are in stock.
