For problems of this type they tend to tell people to use the FOIL (First, Outside, Inside, Last) but I prefer to simply multiply the first term through the 2nd parentheses then multiply the 2nd term through. It's the same thing without the confusing terminology.
(3x-2)(x-4) = 3x(x) + 3x(-4) -2(x) -2(-4) = 3x2 - 12x -2x +8 = 3x2 - 14x +8
