Question

Two gardeners are comparing their charges. One charges $20 initially, and then $15 per hour. The other charges $17 per hour. What would be the time involved for a job for which they both charge the same amount?

Answer 1

Let c = the amount charged and h = hours.  For gardener 1, c = $15h + $20.  For gardener 2, c = $17h.  When they charge the same amount, the charges are equal:

 

$15h + $20 = $17h

 

Solve for h.
