Sub this into the 2nd equation:

5 pails + 3( 4/3 pails ) = 1.6L

 

simplify

5 pails + 4 pails = 9 pails  = 1.6L

1 pail = 1.6/9 L

 

CHECK

using the 1st equation:  1 bottle = 4/3 * 1.6/9 = 6.4/27 L

pails + bottles:

5(1.6/9) + 3(6.4/27) = 8/9 + 6.4/9 = 14.4/9 = 1.6L  OK!!
