Thanks so much for your question. And absolutely! I think that the more you practice, the more you will be acostummed to the language and the spead on which the Spanish speaking person is talking.
A recommendation I can give you as a native Spanish speaker and later ESL in the US person is, to have fun, and make sure you are learning the Spanish dialect of the country you are going to. This will facilitate your experience learning very much by having the right vocabulary. I say this because, for example, the word for "Straw" in Spanish varies in each country and they are not even remotely similar.
Another trick I can recommend is watching TED Talks and/or movies in Spanish. I specially did Disney movies when learning English and helped me a lot to learn the words, because I know the songs and text in Spanish and at some point I got rid of the subtitles in English to train my ear.
