You only need to understand three simple grammar rules about accent marks. With these, you can pronounce and spell about 80% of Spanish words correctly:
- Agudas (words stressed on the last syllable) have a written accent if they end in n, s, or a vowel.
- Examples: canción, inglés, café.
- Llanas (words stressed on the second-to-last syllable) get an accent mark only if they do not end in n, s, or a vowel.
- Examples: fácil, lápiz — but mesa, hablan don’t need one.
- Esdrújulas (words stressed on the third-to-last syllable) always have an accent mark.
- Examples: música, pájaro, rápido.
Once you get these three rules, you stop relying on memory and start reading and writing with real confidence. And when someone explains it in a clear, logical way… it all clicks 😉
