How can you help a non-English speaking student

Question

Recently I worked with a French young woman. We worked together for 6 months.

When she came to Florida, she spoke very little English and did not write as well.

I started at the primary level, teaching phonics and grammar. We moved to building sentences,

role played and had interesting conversations, starting at a beginner level and moving to a more

experienced speaker.

My student is heading back to France this week and is ready for an English speaking University.

She has accomplished a lot through her ESL lessons and I am very proud of her!

I had a similar experience with Asian students who came to the United States knowing very little English.

We did lessons revolving phonics, reading, comprehension, we read cultural stories and discussed how their experiences differed from the ones we have. I tried to acclimate them to their new society by discussing different states and what they offered. We discussed the town they were living in and what was available, where was the post office? I brought in forms to show them how to send packages. We went to the grocery store to find customer service, bought cheese to show how to order, did self check out to teach them how to do this to save time. We had many discussions on topics that were of interest to them. Learn how to write a thank you note. Discuss children's progress with a teacher. The years spent with all of my students were always very rewarding because I felt that they were empowered by the knowledge they had gained.
