When it comes to writing an expository essay, the structure is always the key. You may lead into you topic with a question or perhaps, if relevant, a historical recap. But the end of your first paragraph or introduction should always end with a thesis statement. That thesis statement is developed of your own opinion, but must use specific points to support it. Typically, there are three or more points that can be listed generally and then explained thoroughly (with lots of credible citations) in the paragraphs that follow. Your conclusion is the great bow on this present; you'll restate the points as well as briefly go over the evidence used to support them.
