Whether it’s a historical event, a science concept, or even a math strategy, when it's wrapped in a narrative, it just sticks better. Stories give context, spark curiosity, and make abstract ideas feel real. That’s why I often use storytelling in my classroom and tutoring sessions. I try to turn lessons into mini adventures, using books with relatable characters, or even letting students create their own stories to explain what they’ve learned. That said, I love combining stories with games and visuals; especially for younger learners or students who need more hands-on engagement. It’s all about layering different modes of learning so that every student has an entry point.

Learning is a game that involve all the senses, and it must be interesting, multi-sensory, and active, dynamic, and interactive. I was put in the slow group because I did not speak American English, and my mother only spoke German. My father spoke American English as a soldier in post-war Germany. Television played a learning mode, and my mother learned English via commercials, soap opera, and comic books. The broken phrases she memorized were elementary; but because was a musician, we heard Beethoven, Schubert, and Mozart, and acquired a non-verbal feeling for tone, emotive, gesture, and notes that were like alphabets or colors for emotions. The combo was electric. I feel Dr. James Asher from San Jose State is exactly right we co0nnect ideas, images, and transform the nonverbal to linguistic competence through movement, physical activity or gestures, dancing, climbing and singing or clapping.
