Math and science made easy - learn from a retired engineer
Let "m" represent the amount of money that Marc contributed and let "j" represent the amount of money that John contributed.
Then m + j + 25 = 241
But m = 2j (because Marc contributed twice the amount that John contributed).
So we can replace "m" with "2j" in our first equation:
2j + j + 25 = 241 or
3j + 25 = 241
To solve, first subtract 25 from both sides, then divide both sides by 3:
3j + 25 = 241
3j = 241 - 25
3j = 216
j = 216/3
j = 72
Since
m = 2j then:
m = 2(72)
m = 144
Marc: $144
John: $72
Marry: $25
