Speaking, reading, writing, and listening skills all matter, however they develop at different rates. I always say reading develops quickest, and speaking/listening slowest. You have to account for that when teaching and helping students learn because grammar will NOT be perfect, but the goal should always be to understand and be understood by other speakers or readers. You can learn Spanish without ever being perfect at grammar because that is how we learn our first languages anyways. No one sits you down at age 2 and teaches you what the subjunctive mood is or what the imperative is. You just know. Learning as a by product of doing is key.
