That is perfect, and something I'm emulating as the parent of a homeschooler, myself! It has to be directly applicable - that way, the student can put it to use, and see its utility. Great job to your mom!
Being a homeschool student I loved the freedom of learning. My mom traditionally taught with a model /guide for us to think about why we were studying a particular subject. For example she would use a farm model to teach us nouns, verbs, adjectives, pronouns, conjunction, all areas of speech using the farm as our model, instead of just learning the definition for parts of speech, or a pencil and paper exercise without much meaning.
