The Lost Generation were a group of individuals who had been severely injured, both literally and psychologically, by World War I. Notable figures include Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald. The person who coined this term was Gertrude Stein, who was the mother figure to all of these individuals and her "lost generation" phrase was used in the forward of Ernest Hemingway's first novel "The Sun Also Rises", where the main character cannot have children because of his war injury so there is a literal "lost generation" being biologically withheld.
