For example, let's suppose we conduct a study testing the effect of a certain medication and gather a ton of data on various physiological measures and outcomes. This would be quantitative research. And when we do studies like these, we aim to gather as random a sample as possible, because we want our sample to be unbiased and indicative of the general population.

Now, let's suppose a few of the participants report significant mood changes as a result of the medication, and we want to assess the qualities of these changes. We may conduct an interview with these participants and gather information on their experience to better understand this impact. This is qualitative research, and you may notice it does not feature random sampling like the first part of our study. This is because - in this case - we're interested in understanding a comparatively narrow band of experience, as opposed to generalizing our results to the greater population. And so, rather than randomly sampling members of our study, we hand select people with the experiences that we want to understand in greater depth.
