Of the Twelve Tribes of Israel, the Levites weren’t included in the general census for a specific reason: their unique role within the community. They were seen as being endowed with a special divine appointment to serve as priests and caretakers of the Tabernacle and the Ark of the Covenant it contained. This special role meant they were set apart from the other eleven tribes. The Levites also had military exemption, due to their dedicated service to God.
Therefore, since their role and responsibilities differed significantly from the other tribes, the Levitical tribe was counted separately, emphasizing their unique position within the Israelite nation.
