In 1565, conquistador Pedro Menendez of Aviles, Spain landed at what is today North Florida and called his city St. Augustine after the famous saint. It is thought that perhaps Ponce de Leon searched for the Fountain of Youth in th same area some years before, but there is no proof to support this argument. Tristan de Luna landed in what is today called Pensacola (named after the Indian tribe who lived there) in 1559, but the small settlement was destroyed by a hurricane and has only recently been rediscovered by archaeologists.
