How Black Woman Shifted the World of Fashion: Deconstructing Dior
The haute couture brand, Dior has remained in relative popularity since 1946. The House of Dior has faced many accusations of cultural appropriation. One of their previous collections, Spring 2000 Ready-to-Wear is influenced by the 90s African-American female hip-hop artist, Lauryn Hill. Yet, she ceased to receive recognition or a collaboration offer at the time. Dior continued a pattern of selective “borrowing” of black female fashion styles for their own financial gain. There were three models of color out of 40 excluding Lauryn Hill, 25 are seen wearing afrocentric wigs resembling dreadlocks and their outfits share similar features to Hill’s. Dreadlocks are significant to rastafarianism and Jamaican culture as a whole, not to be worn as a wig to be taken on and off. The world is dominated by the white community currently and we must have an accurate representation of what it is to be a black woman. We need to conduct necessary research to understand the impact Dior’s collections have on the white audience consuming it. We are aiming to understand how the appropriation of black women’s cultural aesthetics in Dior, impact how the white community perceives authenticity and representation in the black community.
An attached passage to describe the Spring collection in Vogue reads, “Couture blaxploitation, logos-a-go-go, leather-clad revolutionaries, whip-toting modern courtesans—where else but at Dior? (Nast)” Simply emphasizing their ability to openly admit to creating fashion based on “blaxploitation” and characterizing it as “couture.” Oftentimes these stereotypical creations that may seem like “just fashion” create a distorted view of black women by white designers without a connection to the culture themselves. Therefore displaying black women in an inaccurate light towards the public, more as a costume to wear then human beings.

Have you considered adding some information about how Rhianna has totally changed the fashion industry? Thinking about how her new company has changed the way people think about beauty and size? https://www.vogue.com/article/rihanna-dior-couture-front-row-fashion I feel like some more solid examples would help to strenghten your argument.
