The noun "case" will be referring to a situation, a problem, an example, or a series of events. Examples of "case" as a noun:
- Legal or medical situation: "My court case begins next week," or "The doctors are working hard on this case, but it's very difficult."
- Other situations/logistics: "I'll give you my extra car key in case I lose mine while I'm traveling."
- New information/changing situation: "I didn't realize these sweaters were on sale! In that case, I'm going to buy two."
- Objects: a variety of protective boxes or covers, such as suitcase, briefcase, pencil case, CD or video case, makeup case, eyeglass case, etc. This includes larger items, like a bookcase, fireproof case, gun case, instrument case, and so on.
I believe there's only one example of "case" as an infinitive verb:
- to case a joint: a slang phrase made popular in gangster movies from the 1930s, meaning to closely inspect a place ("joint" meaning a club or bar) with the intention of robbing it. The idea is to see how easy or difficult it would be to rob the place and get away.
