Both languages are phonetically similar. Given their geographic proximity and the cultural crossovers which have occurred throughout history, and the history of the eastern and western Roman Empire (the east Greek speaking and the west Latin speaking), and the fact that modern Castilian Spanish is rooted in Latin, it is not surprising that the two languages hold many phonetic similarities and also share many words. Anytime two languages share a common history and people, they will also always evolve to share many linguistic characteristics. Hope this helps. Feel free to reach out to me if you'd like to further discuss this topic, there is a lot more to it than what I have summarized above!

Yes, different from South American Spanish; I am Venezuelan Spaniard and when I went to study in NYC I could not distinguish Greek English from Spaniard English; it is like Japanese phonetics is identical to South American Spanish, Words like "Chika" means Tunnel.01/23/24
