The Erie Canal connected the North and the South by providing a water route from the Great Lakes in the North to the Hudson River in the South. Completed in 1825, the canal allowed for transportation of goods and people, fostering economic ties between the regions and contributing to the growth of trade and commerce. It also allowed for a much easier mode of migration, since roads at that time were nearly impassable during the wet seasons and traveling much longer distances became a lot easier to accomplish.
