What is the difference between the verb Ser and Estar in Spanish?

Karen P.

Spanish and Portuguese are the only major world languages with two verbs for “be.” English has only “be.” Ser - Generally means “permanent.” Estar - Generally means “changing.” But, not always!

The verb estar is generally connected to temporary events, actions that are not ongoing. The verb ser on the other hand relates to permanent, ongoing events. See below one example for each. Estar: Hoy estoy muy contento/contenta. This refers to today only. Ser: Es muy importante leer cada dia de su vida. This refers to the importance of reading throughout one's entire life.

The easiest rule is: "How you feel and where you are always use the verb ESTAR", for anything else use SER.
