While scents do not control an animal's happiness, scents can affect stress levels. For example, humans calm down when exposed to lavender essential oils. It's often used with chamomile to help with stress. However, it is toxic to cats. Catnip is helpful for giving our furry friends a little bit of a mood boost. Music for cats helps too!
If your feline friend is getting too stressed out, there are lots of over-the-counter treats that help to calm them down. Having something of yours close to them might also help because you are their safe space. I would leave a blanket out for my cat when I would go to work to help her with separation anxiety when I first got her. Now, she doesn't need it as much!
I hope this helps to answer your question!
