Muscle activity when walking downstairs

Amanda is walking downstairs. Explain what muscle(s) are involved at the knee of the descending lower extremity: what is the prime mover(agonist) and what type of muscle contraction is utilized (concentric, eccentric or isometric)? What muscle is inhibited? What muscle(s) might be a synergist? Is walking downstairs considered a power or control motion?

Anne M.

When Amanda steps down, the prime mover of the descending lower extremity is the quadriceps muscle group, especially the rectus femoris and vastus lateralis. These muscles are eccentrically contracting. The hamstrings group is inhibited during this movement and the gastrocnemius would be considered a synergist, also eccentrically contracting. Descending stairs is considered to be a control type of movement because it is decelerating the leg as it goes down the stairs. Also, note the vastus medialis is extremely important in making sure the patella tracks properly during the motion.
