Good question! The best answer is to make a strong claim. So, if the essay question is "What is the best color?" a good claim is "Blue is the best color." This is, of course, totally debatable, but that's the point of an argument. You would then proceed to write about why you think blue is the best compared to other colors.
Now, if you're writing a research paper, a strong thesis is still a claim, but also more of a summary of what you want your research to be about. So for example, if you are doing research on the color purple in Ancient Rome, you might say "Purple was an important color in Ancient Rome." Yet again, totally debatable, but this claim presents two things: 1. You are talking about the color purple in Ancient Rome and 2. You are talking about the importance of purple in Ancient Rome. Both of these are important pieces of information given by your thesis claim. Another thing to remember is: a strong claim makes a paper more interesting. So keep that in mind!
