Roots = -b ± √(b²-4ac)

In this problem, we have x² + 7x + 1 = 0

a = 1

b=7

c=1

Plugging these into the quadratic formula, we have

Roots = -7 ± √(7² – 4(1)(1)

                        2(1)

           = -3.5 ± ½√45

 

So

Roots are -3.5 + ½√45 and -3.5 - ½√45 or ≈ - 6.854 and -0.146
