Was I completely wrong?

I submitted an essay about changing the world and I used the phrase "to fetch a much needed change in the word" was it definitely incorrect?

There's nothing grammatically incorrect about it. It's not a usual turn of phrase, but every usual one had to be made up at some point. It's correctness will be dependent on the context. Fetch means to bring back (from someplace else). If you are bringing this change about by looking towards another culture or an alternative viewpoint as a role model, then it's completely correct. If the change is coming from within, then "fetch" is probably not your best word choice.
