When iron (Fe) metal is added to a solution of ferric chloride (FeCl3), a single displacement reaction occurs, forming ferrous chloride (FeCl2) and releasing elemental chlorine (Cl2) gas as a byproduct:
2Fe(s) + 3FeCl3(aq) → 2FeCl2(aq) + 3Cl2(g)
The reaction is exothermic and produces a yellowish-brown gas (Cl2) that has a pungent odor.
