Charlotte leaves the house with money in her wallet. She goes to the store and spends ⅓ of the money. Then she goes to a coffee shop and spends ¼ of the money she has left. Then she goes to the restaurant and spends ½ of her remaining money at the restaurant. Charlotte then returns home.

When she gets home, what fraction of her money from the beginning of the day is left in her wallet?

After the store she has 2 / 3 of her money.

After coffee she has (3 / 4) of the (2 / 3) or 1 / 2 of her money

At the restaurant she spends (1 / 2) of the (1/ 2) so she has 1 / 4 left.

Suppose she starts with $120 (divides easily by 2, 3 and 4).

Spends 1/3rd: 1/3 x 120 = 40; 120 - 40 = $80 left.

Spends 1/4: 1/4 x 80 = 20; 80 - 20 = $60 left

Spends 1/2: 1/2 x 60 = 30; 60 - 30 = $30 left.

$30 left out of original $120 = 30/120 or 1/4 of original $120 is left.
