In order to determine the value of equivalent fractions, we must always multiply both the top (the numerator) and the bottom (the denominator) by the same value.
Why? Any fraction with the same numerator and denominator equals 1:
2/2 = 1
3/3 = 1
56 / 56 = 1
When we multiply by some version of 1, we get the same value, but with fractions, a different number of pieces.
Therefore, to find equivalent fractions for the following mixed numbers, we must multiply the top and bottom by the same number. However, the mixed numbers need to be improper fractions first.
4 1/3 = 13/3
13 x 2 = 26
3 x 2 = 6
Now, keep multiplying the top and bottom by the same number, just change the number! Try the same thing with 2 2/5.
