Hello Iris,
I will 'help' you, but not give the final answers. :)
X Y
1 8
2 20
3 32
4 44
A. To write an equation in y = mx + b we need the common difference (the amount the dollars increase each hour) which is m, and the amount for zero hours, which is b. Find m by noticing how much the dollar amount goes up for each increase in 1 hour. Find b by adding one row to the table with x = 0 and y = _____.
To find the amount of hours needed to earn $68, set y = 68 in your equation and solve for x.
B. Is this a function? If you are given a number of hours, can you find the dollar amount without confusion? That is, if I ask how many dollars for 3 hours, is it obvious from the table what the answer is? As long as there isn't two different dollar amounts for a given number of hours, then it |S a function.
C. Is it linear? That means that if you plotted the pairs in the table on a graph, they would line up straight. You can tell without plotting the graph as well. if the numbers in the x column always change by the same amount, and the numbers in the y column always change by the same amount, they will line up straight when plotted.
If you still have questions, come back here and ask.
