If you are new to homeschooling, you are probably wondering if you did the right thing by pulling your child out of school. Sometimes, we have children that's needs aren't being met in a school setting. Try to remember the reasons that you pulled your child out of school first. Where they being bullied? Were they having trouble focusing? Were they just bored? Write those reasons down to remind yourself when things at home get interesting. Remember that you are not trying to recreate a classroom in your home, instead you are trying to foster a love of learning in your home. Homeschooling looks different in every family and that's what makes it so cool. Some people take trips across the country to learn geography. Other families might just want to go to the library and read about other places and visit them virtually. What matters the most about homeschooling is finding the things that both you and your child love and doing them together. As long as there's learning happening, you are doing it right.
Subjects like math and science can be daunting if you are thinking in terms of a traditional school. But remember both math and science happen all around you every day. Like to sew? Making a quilt or buying fabric involve math. Learning to cook? Measuring all the ingredients counts as math. Take it a step further and go to the grocery store to learn a budget or how to weigh items. Cooking is also science. If I put baking soda and vinegar in a recipe what happens? What makes an egg change color when you cook it? Let the world be your science and math lab.
As for recording grades it depends on your child's grade level, where you live and what's required by your state. You can look here for homeschool laws based on each state: https://hslda.org/legal The grades are determined by the parent, so if your child doesn't understand something that you are teaching, like multiplication, you can stay on that topic until they do master it. There's no rush to complete a topic by a certain time, a topic is complete when you child understands it. Remember to enjoy your kids because they won't stay young forever and happy homeschooling!
