Skills & Motivation: Elementary Reading / Writing and Public Speaking
Writing is the expressive side to reading. A child needs to have his or her mind filled with words- words that tell stories, describe things and events, that form images. A child needs to be read to from the beginning. Later, they need to have fun reading. Writing responses or associations to what they are reading is a good way to both enhance their reading comprehension and also develop their writing fluency. I think that if students are encouraged to write, keep writing for fluency--never mind structural or organization skills at first--just keep writing, they will develop the desire to communicate effectively and then the teaching of skills will be more meaningful to them.
