CASPer Scenario 5: You are a senior in high school, and you play in the school’s volleyball team. The coach’s daughter, Marianne, is one of your classmates and also plays on the team. Since you both started high school, she has been the team captain every year. The coach chooses the team captain. Marianne is kind, mature, and an excellent player. You are also a strong player and liked by your peers.

1. Are the coach’s actions problematic? If so, how? 2. If you also wanted to be team captain, how would you go about it? 3. Under what circumstances, if any, is it okay for a person in a position of power to appoint family members or friends to other leadership positions?

1. Are the coach’s actions problematic? If so, how? Yes, the fact she has been the captain every year (including the first year when there were other more experienced players) shows favoritism. Since a family member is involved an outside stakeholder should be involved. This can be either another coach or a vote by the team.
