In a sense, you are correct when you say that the numbers 16 - 19 in Spanish are addition as in 10 + 6 = 16 and so on.

There are really (2) ways to write the numbers 16 - 19 in Spanish.

(a). one way is to say "ten and six" , "ten & seven"..... diez y seis , diez y siete

(b).another way is to combine the number words into one word.

so then the "z" in diez becomes a "c" and the "y" becomes an "i".

Both ways are still pronounced the same way.

dieciseis, diez y seis, sixteen - 16

diecisiete, diez y siete, seventeen - 17

dieciocho, diez y ocho, eighteen - 18

diecinueve, diez y nueve, nineteen - 19
