We should care about this because this form of racism is not only real, but it creates disparities in the quality of healthcare (and therefore overall healthiness) that is provided to indigenous people in Canada. For instance, the mortality rates of indigenous mothers and babies is significantly higher than their non-indigenous counterparts. Life expectancies and overall wellbeing are also similarly impacted. By not addressing indigenous specific racism in healthcare in Canada, we create space for these disparities to exist.
