Hello Bailey, my advice if you feel doubtful about this kind of inequality problems would be to resort to a number line, which can be specially useful when we deal with negative numbers, as in the first case (-9;-3):
- (-9;-3)
y<x-3
-3<-9-3
-3<-12 False
- (4;-10)
y<x-3
-10<4-3
-10<-1 True
- (5;4)
y<x-3
4<5-3
4<2 False
- (2;3)
y<x-3
3<2-3
3<-1 False
- (-5;5)
y<x-3
5<-5-3
5<-8 False
