HW 5A - THORNDIKE'S PUZZLE BOX

Thorndike devised the puzzle box to study learning under controlled conditions.• He found learning was gradual, and summarized his findings in the Law of Effect, that rewards stamp in a connection between the preceding response and the stimuli present.• In reinforcement, a stimulus is contingent on a response (the stimulus is presented after the

response but not in its absence); in classical conditioning, the presentation of the stimulus is contingent on another stimulus.

For this assignment, watch the following videos . What did you think(explain in one paragraph)?

Two nice re-creations of Thorndike’s original experiment with cats are available at:Puzzle box (Thorndike) - YouTubeThorndike Puzzle Box Experiment - YouTube

There is also a nice video of a dog learning to escape (as well as extinction and spontaneous recovery) at:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-g2OmRXb0gAssignment

HW 5B - SHAPING

Originally developed to teach rats to press a bar, shaping involves first reinforcing whatever aspect of a person's behavior is closest to the desired response.

Once this behavior begins to occur more frequently, the experimenter withholds reinforcement until some closer approximation to the desired response occurs, and so on until the desired response has been established.

For this assignment, watch the following videos and write your reaction (explain in two paragraphs).

Video of Skinner shaping a pigeon is available at:

And another showing a product of such shaping, two pigeons playing ping pong:

.HW 5c - Schedules of Reinforcement

A reinforcer’s effectiveness also depends on its schedule of presentation.

Partial reinforcement schedules (Fixed Ratio, Variable Ratio, Fixed Interval, Variable Interval) support higher rates of responding and also increase responding in extinction.

In most practical situations it is best to start by reinforcing every response (CRF or Continuous Reinforcement schedule) and then gradually reduce the probability of reinforcement to a partial reinforcement schedule.

For this assignment, watch the following video and write your reaction. (explain in one paragraph)
