Sunni Muslims and Shia Muslims are divided because of Muhummad's successor. Shia Muslims believed that his successor should have been Ali, his son in law, while Sunni Muslims believe that his successor should have been Abu Bakr. In modern day time, Sunni and Shia differences contribute to divides in the Middle East, as Shias are a majority in Iran and Iraq, and Sunnis are a majority in other countries such as Saudi Arabia.
