Think of plantar-flexion of the feet (lower extremity) as the ability to "plant down on the gas pedal" i.e. pushing down on the gas pedal. These same muscles would allow you to stand on your toes. Opposingly, the dorsiflexion muscles bring your toes upwards allowing you to walk on your heel essentially.
