1. What changes took place in Southwest Asia following World War 1? A massive change of territory occurred in the Middle East/Southwest Asia following WWI. Before, countries in this region were almost exclusively part of the Ottoman Empire. As WWI saw the fall of the Ottomans, the region was divided up between the British and the French into Mandates.
2. What is a mandate? Mandates were "sovereign" countries that existed under the firm rule of the British or French governments. These were different than the various colonies of those ruling countries which were simply part of the Empire, these were countries whose governing body answered to the will of the Mandating State. For example: Iraq and Palestine were both British Mandates and as such had all the shots called by the Brits.
3. What was the problem with these mandates? Being your "own country" while still being under the thumb of another is an exercise in futility. Any laws, taxes, etc. that the country wanted to enact/levy had to be approved by the Mandating State. While these countries were sovereign in name, they were little different that colonies of those states from previous eras.
4. What words would you use to describe the government of Iraq since 1920? "Revolting", "Chaotic", "Unstable", "Occupied", "Figurehead Monarchy"
I hope this helps! Have a wonderful day!
