A large part of this answer depends on what kind of professional writer you wish to become. Are you looking to write children's books? Creative fiction? Classroom textbooks? Be published in peer-reviewed journals?
Unless you work directly for a teaching institution, many authors these days are choosing to begin by self-publishing their work. This can be helpful if you have a busy schedule and have difficulties meeting inflexible deadlines, or especially if you're looking to publish any type of creative writing for the first time.
There are many programs which can help you get started, Writercosmos.com and selfpublishing.com in particular are 2 extremely helpful resources if you are looking to self-publish.
Good luck! And keep writing!
