Definitely check the assignment and your syllabus, then ask your teacher if it's not in there. That said, when I was in school, it was all MLA.

To be successful in your English class the first step is to fully understand each assignment as well as the grading rubrics. Understand what has been asked and how is it to be evaluated. In my experience the assignment will have the answer to your question. Otherwise, you may find the desired format as part of the course syllabus. If it is not spelled out in writing, I agree with Maria that a quick email asking the instructor to clarify is the best option.

English classes tend to stick with MLA format. APA is used more for STEM. That being said, some schools may choose a standard for the entire student body. Always check with your professor first!
