Hello Joshua,
First, you have to follow the Order of Operations, or PEMDAS (Parentheses-Exponents-Multiplication-Division-Addition-Subtraction). So start by multiplying and dividing the numbers inside the parentheses in the equation above as follows:
Step 1: Multiply 8x1 = 8
Step 2: Multiply 5x1 = 5
Step 3: Divide 5/100 = 1/20 when reduced into lowest terms/simplest form from the given equivalent fraction
Step 4: Multiply 9x1= 9
Step 5: Divide 9/100, which is already reduced into lowest terms/simplest form as the given fraction
Step 6: Add 8 + 5/100 + 9/100
Step 7: Since the two fractions shown above in Step 6 contain the common denominator of 100, you can simply add the two numerators 5 and 9 together to get a new numerator of 14. Now your new fraction equals 14/100 (or 7/50 when reduced into lowest terms/simplest form accordingly).
Step 8: Add 8 + 7/50, which is your answer! 8 + 7/50
