It's not between the earth and the sun, it's because of how the sun hits the earth within earths atmosphere. The earth is not heated in all areas by the sun equally, and this alone causes most of our weather. Areas of high and low pressure are caused by ascending and descending air. As air warms it ascends, leading to the creation of low pressure at the surface. On the other hand, as air cools it descends, leading to high pressure at the surface.
