Usually, I work with students in one-hour blocks every week with homework in between to support whatever we are working on. The first lesson or two, we do exercises so that I can determine each student's strengths and weaknesses. I also ask about their interests (to better tailor each lesson) and their academic goals. Sometimes the student just wants to work on a paper or application and I can help them brainstorm, outline, learn better writing techniques (to improve sentence structure or vocabulary, for example), and edit. Often, we practice the typical 5-paragraph essay and how students can write with clarity, detail and power.
