This is a math question, but I can answer. Absolute value gives you a measure of how far from 0 a value is irrespective of it's sign. Example: How many feet below sea level is an elevation of - 200 ft. It would be 200 feet. You can not have a negative distance.
An elevation of Bad Water CA at -280 feet tells you that this place is a very low place. It is below sea level. It is in Death Valley and very hot in the summer and any water at this place is likely too salty to drink.
Does that help?
