average rate of change = (y2 - y1)/(x2 -x1)
for the omterval -2 to -1, that simplifies to y2-y1 = slope of secant line
instantaneous rate of change = derivative = y' = slope if tangent line

Hi Katime, I believe you are missing the equation (y = mx+b) or f(x) = ... needed to solve this problem. So far you have..
Average rate of change =
A(x) = f(b)-f(a)/(b-a)
a= -2
b= -1
If you provide the equation, you can plug b and a into it to get the answer.
